We also support the Sirona Cares Foundation (sironacares.org). This blog post is about them.
We like Sirona Cares because we support the idea that their good works in Haiti help to provide that country’s impoverished citizens with a means to make a living in the future. The old adage that applies here is the one that states: “Give a man a fish, and he’s fed for one day. Teach a man to fish and he’s fed for a lifetime.”
For example, our last small donation to Sirona was for $126.00. And here’s the impact of just that one, little gift:
• For $126, Sirona will plan 1,260 Jatropha trees in Haiti. Not only do these plantings help reverse the deforestation of that country and improve farming soil, but they create biofuel to generate income for the farmers.
• Each tree will create enough seeds for a gallon of oil per year that is a drop-in replacement for diesel fuel. (Seed production begins at 18 months and is mature in Year 5).
• If fuel is valued at $5 per gallon, the $126. donation will generate $6,300 per year in one of the world’s poorest villages. This revenue will continue for the life of the trees (between 25 – 45 years).
• If the conservative estimated life of a tree is 25 years, the $126 donation will ultimately produce 31,500 galls of fuel.
• The economic impact of the donation therefore will be, at a minimum, $157,500.
How can anyone go wrong with numbers like this?!
